Weekly Earthquake Watch: The Planet Had a Busy Week
The planet had a busy week. Here's the seismic log, straight from the public USGS-tracked feeds:
- Largest this week: magnitude 6.6 near La Roche in the Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia
- Largest today: magnitude 5.6 near Tamarindo, Guanacaste, Costa Rica
- Total: roughly 929 earthquakes of magnitude 1.5 or greater in the last seven days
That's not unusual — the Earth rings like a bell, constantly. Most of these happen far from anyone, deep in the ocean or along remote plate boundaries.
A note on what this is and isn't: this is a roundup, not a forecast. Nobody can predict earthquakes — not us, not anyone. We're just reading the instruments out loud.
Quick question: have you ever actually felt an earthquake? Where were you?
