Auburn Cold Case: $5,000 Reward Offered in the 2017 Killing of Herman "Ce-Ce" Lane

Nine years, and the killer has never been named.

On March 4, 2017, Auburn police responded to an apartment complex on North Dean Road in Auburn, Alabama, and found Herman Cornelius "Ce-Ce" Lane, age 26, dead inside his residence. Investigators determined he was the victim of a homicide. Nearly a decade later, the case remains unsolved — no suspect has ever been identified or arrested.

Fresh money on the table

This week, CrimeStoppers 215-STOP put up $5,000 cash for information leading to the identification and arrest of the person responsible for Lane's death. It is the clearest sign in years that authorities believe someone, somewhere, knows what happened inside that apartment.

"Someone knows what happened," CrimeStoppers said. "Your information could help bring answers and justice for Herman's family."

What investigators have said

When Auburn police appealed for help in 2017, they disclosed one detail they have never let go of: Lane occasionally associated with people he met through social media. Investigators specifically asked anyone with information about his death, his habits, his associations, or his activity prior to March 4, 2017 to come forward.

Nearly a decade later, those old messages, posts, and connections may still exist. A DM somebody remembers. A photo somebody saved. A person who knew something and never told anyone.

How to submit a tip

Tips may be provided anonymously. The $5,000 reward goes to information that leads to the identification and arrest of the suspect.

Cold cases don't close themselves — they close because somebody decides to speak up. If you know anything about what happened to Herman "Ce-Ce" Lane, now is the time.
