13 children held at knifepoint in Brazil school — police kill suspect, every child survives

CURITIBA, Brazil — Thirteen children are alive tonight because a police tactical team made the call no one ever wants to make.

A man of about 40 stormed the São Braz CMEI — a municipal early-childhood center in Curitiba's São Braz neighborhood — on Friday afternoon, armed with a knife, a replica firearm and flammable material. He locked himself inside a classroom with 13 children and sprayed the room with fuel, in what police describe as an apparent attempt to set it on fire.

Hours of negotiation, then the breach

The rest of the school's students and staff were evacuated without injuries while special units cordoned off the area. Military Police negotiators worked the scene for more than two hours — some reports put it closer to three — with BOPE (the Special Operations Battalion), the Municipal Guard and the Fire Department on site, plus helicopter air support.

When negotiations failed, agents moved in. The assailant was shot dead at around 6:20 p.m. local time.

All 13 children were freed immediately. According to the Military Police, none suffered serious injuries.

Aftermath

Curitiba's city hall and emergency services activated medical and specialized psychological support teams for the rescued children, their families and the school's staff.

Municipal authorities have opened an investigation to establish the motive and to verify whether the man had any prior connection to the school. Preliminary reports mention a history of schizophrenia, but authorities have not confirmed any link between that and the attack — the motive remains under investigation.

Why this one matters, Graveyard Crew

School attacks in Brazil have been rising in recent years — in 2023, four children were killed when a man with a hatchet burst into a daycare in neighboring Santa Catarina. This time, the ending was different: 13 families got their kids back.

What do you think made the difference here — the negotiation time, the tactical response, or just luck? Drop your take below.
