Detroit Mass Shooting: 14 Counts Filed After 3 Killed, 4 Wounded Over a Stolen Phone

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has filed charges in one of the deadliest weekends Detroit has seen this year — and the alleged motive sounds like it came from a barroom fight, not a mass shooting.

Christopher Rafael Gouch has been charged with 14 counts in connection with the Sept. 27 shooting at an after-hours gathering in a residence in the 14800 block of Prest Street. The charges include three counts of premeditated murder and four counts of assault with intent to commit murder.

Seven people were shot. Three died. Four were wounded — a 32-year-old woman from Redford, a 25-year-old man from Redford, a 30-year-old Detroit man, and a 28-year-old Detroit woman. The deceased victims were all over the age of 30.

According to Worthy, the entire thing started over a cell phone:

"a fight between women who couldn't control their emotions because, allegedly, a cell phone went missing."

The argument broke out inside the house and spilled outside. That's when, prosecutors say, Gouch "entered the melee and fired multiple shots."

The Prest Street address was no stranger to police. DPD Chief Todd Bettison said officers had been called there seven times since the beginning of the year, and there was already an investigation into the location — which he described as having "dancing-type activities" similar to a strip club.

The four wounded victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries and are expected to recover.
