Haverhill shooting suspect caught in Exeter, NH — 11 minutes from tip to cuffs
A woman wanted in connection with a shooting in Haverhill, Massachusetts tried to put a state line between herself and the warrant. It didn't help.
Nona M. Basnett, 54, of Sandown, New Hampshire, was arrested around noon on Friday, Oct. 9 at a residence on Chapman Way in Exeter, New Hampshire — where police had tracked her on what they described as an "active, extraditable" arrest warrant stemming from a shooting in Haverhill the previous evening.
The takedown was fast. Around noon, Haverhill police contacted the Exeter Police Department asking for help locating the suspect. Members of the U.S. Marshals Service, detectives from the Haverhill Police Department and Exeter police officers took Basnett into custody 11 minutes later — without incident, according to police.
The charges
Basnett was processed at the Exeter Police Department and charged in New Hampshire as a fugitive from justice, a Class B felony. She was held on preventative detention and transported to the Rockingham County Jail. She is scheduled to be arraigned at the 10th Circuit Court in Brentwood on Tuesday, Oct. 13.
According to an Exeter police press release, Basnett is wanted by the Haverhill Police Department on charges of:
- Assault to murder, armed
- Discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building
- Carrying a loaded firearm without a license
- Possession of a large-capacity firearm/feeding device
What's still unknown
Details of the Haverhill shooting itself remain thin. Police have not said who was shot, whether anyone was injured, or what led to the gunfire. The underlying investigation is ongoing in Massachusetts, and the extradition process will play out in New Hampshire courts next week.
In a press release, Exeter police credited the coordinated efforts of the U.S. Marshals Service and the Haverhill Police Department — and said the department was happy to assist.
This is a developing story. The Night Desk will update as more details are released.
