Arrested after an 11-day manhunt: Akkini McDade, 24, charged with murder in Lubbock shooting

Eleven days. Hundreds of man-hours, many of them overnight. A $5,000 reward on the table. And Thursday, it ended with handcuffs.

Police arrested Akkini McDade, 24, on murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charges in the Oct. 11 shooting that killed 28-year-old Delton Lewis and injured 18-year-old Yundi Inthisan-Johnson in East Lubbock.

What happened Oct. 11

Around 2:40 a.m., officers responded to reports of shots fired near the intersection of East 26th Street and Ivory Avenue. While at the scene, responding officers heard gunshots nearby and found Lewis inside a vehicle that had crashed into a parked vehicle. He had suffered gunshot wounds and died at the scene.

Meanwhile, officers learned that Inthisan-Johnson had been taken to University Medical Center with moderate injuries from gunshots investigators believed were connected to the shooting.

An initial investigation indicated Lewis and Inthisan-Johnson arrived in the area when a gunman approached their vehicle and fired multiple shots at them. McDade was identified as the shooter hours later — and police offered up to $5,000 for information about his whereabouts.

The manhunt

The Lubbock Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit led the investigation, and McDade's arrest was the result of a combined effort of local, state and federal agencies, including:

"TAG members followed numerous leads throughout the past 11 days, attributing to hundreds of man hours, many of which were overnight, to gather valuable information regarding this case," the police release states.

McDade was booked into the Lubbock County Detention Center. His bond is set at $250,000.

Why it matters

This is the payoff of a reward-fueled manhunt working exactly the way it's supposed to: information comes in, a multi-agency team works the leads around the clock, and the suspect is taken in without incident. East Lubbock gets answers for the family of Delton Lewis.

McDade is charged and awaiting further court proceedings. He remains held at the Lubbock County Detention Center.
