Headline card by The Night Desk
What happened
It started just after midnight Sunday with a shooting nobody was hurt in — and ended with deputies in a shootout at a Sarasota home.
According to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office, a shooting was reported at 12:19 a.m. Oct. 11 in the McDonald's parking lot at Bee Ridge and Cattlemen roads in Sarasota. No injuries were reported, and the suspect was gone before law enforcement arrived.
Tracked home
Deputies determined the suspect — Casey King, 39 — had returned to his home at 4818 Hoyer Drive and took positions around the house. A deputy made several announcements from a marked vehicle with its siren activated, directing King to surrender and leave the residence, the agency said.
King then opened fire on deputies in front of the home, the Sheriff's Office said. A deputy returned fire, striking King multiple times. Deputies took him into custody before he was transported to the hospital.
The charges
King was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital in critical but stable condition, according to the Sheriff's Office.
He faces five counts of attempted second-degree murder of a law enforcement officer. Additional charges related to the McDonald's parking lot shooting are expected, according to the agency.
The investigation remains ongoing.
