Selma triple homicide: arrest made days after three men shot dead
Selma police have made an arrest in a weekend triple homicide — and the chief announcing it has barely been in the job a week.
What happened
Three men were shot to death about 2:30 a.m. on Oct. 3 in the 400 block of Highland Avenue in Selma, Alabama. Police Chief Ettice Brickus said Oct. 5 during a news conference at city hall that a person was arrested Oct. 4 in connection with the shootings.
An altercation led to the shootings at a fast food restaurant that is open 24 hours. Brickus said the business had no role in the shootings and declined to say whether the shooting happened in the parking lot, inside the business, or in surrounding areas, citing the ongoing investigation.
Names withheld
Brickus declined to release the name of the person arrested or the victims, saying the names will be released at a future time. "We want to give a chance for the families to heal," she said.
Everyone involved — the victims and the person arrested — knew each other, Brickus said, and she is "confident" the public faces no danger from the incident.
A direct plea: no retaliation
"Selma is in mourning for three lives," Brickus said, adding that friends and family of the victims should not take part in any retaliation. "This kind of reckless, violent, criminal behavior will not be tolerated in our city."
A chief's first week
Brickus was sworn in as chief Oct. 1 — the shootings happened on her third day into the job.
Mayor Johnny Moss III offered condolences to the victims and praised the speed of the investigation: "I'm appreciative of the very fast action of our detectives and officers, under our new chief, that led to an arrest on yesterday. This was an all-out effort and to get results so quickly was very important."
