23-Year-Old Charged With Murder After Bloomington Porch Shooting

Bloomington, Indiana — A 23-year-old man is charged with murder after a shooting Thursday night that killed a 24-year-old man on a porch in the 1000 block of North Illinois Street, according to a Bloomington Police Department news release reported by The Herald-Times.

Officers responded around 8:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, to multiple 911 calls reporting a man had been shot. Callers told police the suspect — later identified as Jaymon Trey Gilreath — was walking away from the scene, headed east on West 13th Street.

The victim was found near the front door of an apartment with a gunshot wound to the head. He was taken by ambulance to IU Health Bloomington Hospital, where he was declared dead at 9:49 p.m.

Eight minutes

Police fanned out across the neighborhood and took Gilreath into custody at 8:23 p.m. — eight minutes after the first call. He was brought to Bloomington police headquarters for an interview.

Witnesses told investigators that Gilreath was in a relationship with the victim's ex-girlfriend. According to the witness on the porch, the victim was sitting outside the apartment with another man when Gilreath approached on foot, pulled a handgun from his waistline, fired, and walked away.

Officers searched the route Gilreath took after the shooting and found a 9mm handgun in a holster near a park bench in the 1300 block of West 13th Street — believed to be the gun used in the killing. It was seized.

After the interview and a medical evaluation, Gilreath was booked into the Monroe County Jail, where he was charged with murder.

The victim's identity had not been released as of publication; the Herald-Times said the coroner's office had been contacted and the investigation remains ongoing.
