Botched Execution in Tennessee: Two Doses Failed, Governor Halts All Executions Through 2026

Headline card by The Night Desk
Tennessee's execution of Christa Pike went catastrophically wrong: two doses of pentobarbital failed to carry out the sentence, and Pike was left alive — breathing, snoring, in critical condition.
It is the second botched execution in the state this year. In May, the execution of Tony Carruthers IV also failed.
The fallout was swift. Governor Bill Lee has paused ALL executions in Tennessee through the end of 2026, effectively freezing the state's death chamber while officials confront what went wrong — twice.
Pike's case has drawn national attention for decades; she was sentenced to death as a young woman and has spent most of her life on death row. Whatever one's view of capital punishment, two failed executions in five months raise questions no governor can wave away.
The Night Desk will keep this file open. When the state's review lands — or when the pause lifts — you'll read it here first.
