9-year-old killed, 5-year-old hurt in Indianapolis hit-and-run; suspect in custody
A 9-year-old boy is dead and a 5-year-old boy is hospitalized after a driver struck both children and fled the scene on the northwest side of Indianapolis on Sunday afternoon, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
Officers responded shortly after 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 4 to the 6700 block of Eagle Pointe Drive North, near where Interstate 465 meets 46th Street, after a report of a child lying in the street. Officers arrived to find two children who appeared to have been hit by a vehicle that did not stay on the scene.
Both boys were transported to the hospital. The 9-year-old later died. Police did not say whether the two children were related. Police initially said the younger boy was 6, then later clarified he is 5.
About three hours after the crash, Lawrence police took a man into custody in the 10300 block of Pendleton Pike on the east side. IMPD said officers used video and witness evidence to identify the suspect's license plate, then tracked the vehicle's last-known location using automated license plate reader technology and shared it with Lawrence police.
Police did not release details about the vehicle that fled. Anyone with information is asked to call 911, Crime Stoppers, or IMPD Crash Investigations at 317-327-6549.
"This affects so many people," IMPD Sgt. Amanda Hibschman said during a media briefing on site Sunday. "Again, no family should have to endure the loss of a child. They got the worst news imaginable today. And this whole neighborhood is affected by this. They had two kids lying out here in the street."
