Hit-and-run kills 9-year-old, injures 6-year-old on Indy's northwest side

Indianapolis — A 9-year-old boy was killed and a 6-year-old boy injured in a hit-and-run on the city's northwest side Sunday afternoon, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

Shortly after 1:30 p.m., IMPD responded to a call of a child lying in the street in the 6700 block of Eagle Pointe Drive North, near where Interstate 465 meets 46th Street. Officers arrived and found two children who appeared to have been hit by a vehicle. The vehicle did not stay on the scene, police said.

Both boys were transported to the hospital, where the 9-year-old later died. Police did not say if the two children were related. A multi-building apartment complex sits on both sides of Eagle Pointe Drive North.

Police have released no information on any potential suspects and offered no description of the fleeing vehicle.

"This affects so many people," IMPD Sgt. Amanda Hibschman said during a media briefing at the scene. "Again, no family should have to endure the loss of a child. They got the worst news imaginable today. And this whole neighborhood is affected by this. They had two kids lying out here in the street."

Anyone with information is encouraged to call 911, Crime Stoppers, or IMPD Crash Investigations at 317-327-6549.

This is a developing story. The Night Desk will update as police release more information.
