A Saturday morning in Winfield, Alabama turned into a multi-state nightmare, according to police — a woman shot dead in her own kitchen, two children taken, and a family member forced at gunpoint to drive across state lines.

According to the Winfield Police Department, officers responded to a call about a possible homicide at 4:34 a.m. Saturday. The call chain that led them there started with the suspect himself: police say he contacted a sheriff's office in North Carolina and told them he had shot and killed his wife. That office relayed the information to Winfield police.

When officers arrived at the home, they found a woman who had been shot and killed, lying in the kitchen.

Police say the suspect then left the home with two children and held another family member at gunpoint, forcing them to drive to North Carolina. The family member was later able to escape and provided investigators with detailed information about the alleged shooting, police said.

The suspect is in custody. The two children and the family member are safe, according to police.

The identities of the man and his wife have not been released, and police have not announced charges. This is a developing story — we will update as official details are released.
