Des Moines teen charged with attempted murder after ankle monitor, cameras and his own admission tied him to Court Avenue shooting

An 18-year-old was arrested Monday and charged with attempted murder in a weekend shooting on Court Avenue in downtown Des Moines — undone, police say, by his ankle monitor, surveillance cameras, and his own words.

Jayshawn Woods Crawford was taken into custody Monday, Oct. 5, in connection with a shooting that happened around 2 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, near Fourth Street and Court Avenue, according to Des Moines police spokesperson Sgt. Paul Parizek.

The 23-year-old victim was shot at least three times after a verbal altercation, according to court filings. He continues to recover.

How investigators say the case came together

Woods Crawford was on pre-trial release on prior felony charges — drug charges from January, plus second-degree criminal mischief and burglary from March — and was wearing an ankle monitor at the time. Police say the monitor placed him near the scene at the time of the shooting.

That wasn't the only thread. Nearby surveillance video captured him at the scene, Parizek said — and detectives say Woods Crawford admitted to them that he shot the victim.

He is being held in the Polk County Jail with no bail. No court date has been scheduled, and police say the investigation is ongoing.

This is a developing story. The Night Desk will update as court proceedings move forward.
